My Design Philosophy

The Four F's are going to help me to decide what I would like my layout to look like and what I will include in my magazine.

  • Formula-the articles and features that go in the magazine should remain in the same style each week. This is not something I will highly consider as I am only making one edition of the magazine, however I could apply this to the type of articles I will include in my magazine.
  • Format-the design and layout and what the magazine generally 'looks' like. This is something I will look at in a lot of detail for my magazine, when designing my magazine I think the format will be one of the main features I will look at.
  • Frame-this is the margins and gutters, this seems the least important however if you look closely at magazines then you will notice that they help to make the magazine look conventional and professional.
  • Function-'what is the magazine for?' this needs to be clear when designing my pop magazine so that people know what genre my magazine is.

These are some of the other things I need to consider when designing my magazine:

  • Minimal vs. Cluttered
  • Balance
  • Conventional vs. Original
  • Effect of genre/display on design
  • Retro vs. Modern
  • Timeless vs. Now
  • Use of colour
  • Consistency vs. Inconsistency
After looking at these factors, I have been able to gain a clear understanding of the design and layout I would like to have for my magazine.
