The four f's are key elements in the magazine industry which are known as the 'rules' people abide by when creating a magazine. Readers are much less likely to purchase a magazine if the do not include these four techniques;
1. Formula; "the elements which makes up the magazine, in turn having an effect on the reader. Sell lines are not only used on the cover, but throughout the magazine, subconsciously making the reader remember them.
2. Format; "the presentation of the magazine, how they relate to the audience and the particular house style"
3. Function; "the objectives of the magazine. The main objective ranges from informing the audience, to selling something and engaging the audience. The release of the magazine can change the function of it"
4. Frame; "the margins and gutters of the magazine for printing"
