Magazine terminology

Sell Line; a line which persuades the reader into buying the magazine

Banner; a strip containing a phrase and/or images across the top or bottom of the magazine

Menu bar; often positioned at the side of the cover containing information about what's inside

Splash; written across the cover to attract the readers attention

Call out; a part of the front cover which seems to 'call out' and attract the readers eye

Puff; a short piece of text to give the reader information about an article 

Meme; a feature which someone used first, which then becomes popular and is spread across the industry, then becoming a trope

Trope; the stereotypes and conventions of a magazine from repeating someone's original idea

WOB; white font which is on a black background, attracts the reader

Burst; a shape containing information, placed randomly on the cover

Barcode; a machine readable code to define the price of the item

Tagline; a memorable phrase which stays in the mind therefore the reader can often recall it

Ear piece; a piece of information in the corner of the page

Direct mode of address; when the model stares directly into the camera lens or when the information uses pronouns to speak directly to the reader

Dog end; a turn in the page on the cover
