Target Audience, Ideology and Representation

All magazines have a target audience which the magazines design HAS to appeal to and fonts, graphics and colours are all features which will reflect the ideology of the target audience.
Ideology is a set of beliefs, a person or a groups holds.
Different genres of music have different ideologies and this affects how they represent themselves, for example;
POP;

  • Pro-social
  • No drugs
  • No sex
  • No violence
  • Music is never abrasive
  • Not political
  • No swearing
  • Everyone has good looks
  • People are glamorous

ROCK;

  • Anti-social
  • Drugs
  • Sex
  • Violence-and lots of it!
  • Aggression is key
  • Loud music guaranteed
  • Politics are used often
  • Swearing used often
  • Looks are not as important as pop

HIP-HOP;

  • Again, anti-social
  • Drugs
  • Sex
  • Violence is involved
  • VERY loud
  • Political
  • Swearing is expected
  • Similar to rock magazines, looks are not important

Pop magazines are designed primarily to sell as many copies as possible, therefore to make as much money as they can. Whereas rock and hip-hop magazines are more set on expressing the artists and fans feelings rather than gaining commercial success.

The ideology of the type of music will definitely affect the design of the magazine. A pop magazine will use bright, girly and primary colours, with a celebrity on the front smiling. However, rock magazines will be clashing with pop by using aggressive fonts and dark colours. They are very likely to have grimacing bands, quite often they will be making rude gestures.
